We are NOT skilled carpenters and it only took about 6 hours to build. Believe me, if we can do it, you can do it. The frame is made with two-by-fours 96 inches x inches and fastened with deck screws and corner braces.
The cattle panels are 50 inches wide so two of them fit perfectly in the frame. We attached two inch pieces of two-by-two to the bottom of the frame in order to act as a shelf for the cattle panels to sit evenly in the frame.
We used two-by-fours, deck screws, and mending plate fasteners for the door frame. Once the door frame was in, we secured the cattle panel to it using galvanized staples. Using zip ties and a staple gun, we attached 3-foot tall poultry netting across the lower side walls. We used 2x4s, deck screws and corner brackets for the back framing.
We wanted it sturdy enough to handle the weight of roosting boxes and a door to easily access eggs without going in the coop. A simple gate latch fit perfect. The 12ft by 16ft heavy duty tarp covered the entire roof area completely.
We used zip ties to secure it to the chicken coop. Relatively simple for a couple of amateurs to build. And throughout the winter with two space heaters. On many of the warmer days we not only turned off the heaters altogether but we sometimes needed to open up a window or door or both to keep it from overheating. We trimmed back our longevity spinach in the fall, dried the leaves for tea and homemade greens powders and used many of the clippings to start new plants growing throughout the winter in the greenhouse.
We were also growing microgreens in the cattle panel greenhouse. Once they were ready for harvesting, we moved them to our kitchen window for handing daily clipping as needed. You can see the sketch of our cattle panel greenhouse plans below. Then we can add an end wall with an entry at front and an end wall at the back with a window. Once sealed, the task is keeping the temps above 50 degrees but not letting the daytime solar heat get out of hand.
The temporary greenhouse with the frost cloth and one oil-filled radiator style electric heater ran at 10 degrees warmer than outside. For warmer days, venting can be as simple as opening the front door and back window of the greenhouse. Many in our audience are already ahead of us with fantastic greenhouses. We begin to size up the project and the importance of keeping the same location. In the above video, I give a parts list and some estimated prices.
This video is at least a couple of years old and obviously, prices have increased on many of these items bringing up what the total cost of this completed greenhouse would be. I still believe this is one of the most affordable ways to build a sturdy and large greenhouse. In addition to cattle or hog panels, pallets, and greenhouse plastic you need a few U-Posts, T-brackets, hinges, screws, nails, and fence staples.
All of which can be purchased at your local hardware store, ordered on Amazon , or possibly sourced from used resources that can be repurposed to save even more money. Todd Parr. We just went thru a really brutal wind storm a few days ago.
There was a tornado not far from here and we had gusts to 70mph. Many trees were broken off in the storm, including 4 of various sizes on my 2 acres. My cattle panel greenhouse had no problems standing up to the storm. Mine is only 2 panels long. Glad to see yours fared as well. Judith Browning. Thanks for the update! This is great to know I'm hoping to finish it this week and have wondered how it will handle spring storms. We rarely have much snow but hard rains and wind frequently.
I have a lot of starts in by the stove to transplant and move to the hoop house to spend the next month or so before it's time to plant them in the garden. Evan Morgan. Hey Sean, I have been heavily inspired by your videos on plant systems, and am starting a market garden and food forest nursery in Maine. I recently built a 7 cattle panel greenhouse based on your build.
I will be sharing it with a friend. Couldn't find a good source for locust while we wait for ours to grow. I used painted 2x4 and hemlock poles from thinning.
