To start with, the horses have a ton of different stats and they all are important, and learning what these stats are for someone like me who is not familiar with the world of horse racing was really tough.

Now, once the horse racing takes place you have a whole bunch of meters that you need to keep an eye on. It is not just a case of how fast the horse is and how much stamina they have. The relationship between the horse and jockey is important, how they react to a crowd, their starting position, and so on. The presentation is trying to be like the horse racing that you would see on TV and I think Gallop Racer does a decent enough job in this regard. It is easy to look at it now and say it is ugly, but for the PlayStation 2, I think that they did a decent job here.

There is a decent variety of horses in the game, the stadium looks good, and the sound effects such as the commentators, horse noises, and so on all sound pretty authentic. As I am not a huge horse racing aficionado, I am probably not the best person to be giving an opinion on this. However, as a video game, I think that this does have some neat ideas. The problem is the barrier to entry and the learning curve is so huge that it can be hard to stay motivated long enough to learn what the game is all about.
